Learning the craft of casino gaming is no easy task, a Chicago Tribune columnist witnessed firsthand during the second week of 10 weeks a croupier course held in the pavilion Majestic Star in Gary, Indiana, training new recruits for Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.

Like everyone else, Thomas Gutierrez started out as a casino dealer, managed to climb the corporate ladder and will now go on to serve as director of table games at the new casino resort, which will include a gambling hall with 1600 slot machines and 80 table games. An extensive gaming and entertainment complex with of 200,000 square feet.

Bones are like a foreign language

Josh Cole, the dealer Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati, was brought here to teach the new employees the skills necessary to play dice.

New traders learn how to cut casino chips, how to move the dice around the table, calling each roll of the dice, and most importantly, how to do it all with the energy level to engage everyone at the table, a complex and challenging task for most.

"We are looking for something special from these new dealers. We can teach the fundamentals and procedures of the game. We can't teach personalities. That's key."

Unlike dealers who learn craps, trainees know nothing about the language of casinos and must learn both the game and specific announcements at the same time, "it's like learning two foreign languages every day," Josh Cole noted.

Tempting incentives

But the incentives are great because everyone who completes the training gets a bonus of up to 2000 USD , full benefits and a chance at a new career, despite the significant impact on the casino industry from coronavirus-related restriction orders and safety guidelines.

The casino's assets, which are expected to generate for the state over $20 million annually, it also recruits for other positions, including restaurant managers, chefs and cooks, bartenders, waiters and cashiers, as well as positions in security, finance, marketing and guest relations.
