Las Vegas is on the short list to take over the MLB Oakland A's franchise. The team announced this week that it would explore a new home after Bay Area city officials once again failed to agree to terms that would help build a long overdue and desperately needed new stadium.
A's billionaire John Fisher, whose parents founded the clothing brand GAP , said he is looking for a city that is willing to invest in a new professional baseball venue. MLB said yesterday that the A's current home, the Oakland Coliseum, "is not a viable option for baseball's future vision."
The A's future success depends on a new pitch, " Fisher said in a statement.
"Oakland is a great baseball city and we will continue our waterfront ball field project. We will also follow MLB's lead in exploring other markets, "Fisher continued.
A new statement is being strongly considered in Las Vegas. The casino city is now home to four major professional sports leagues. A former professional A team - the Raiders - now calls the gambling mecca home.
Financing of the stadium
Fisher and MLB have proposed to build a $ 12 billion baseball field and multipurpose complex at Howard Terminal in Oakland. Along with the stadium, the field includes 3, 000 affordable housing units, office and retail space and a hotel.
The cost of the stadium portion would be about $1 billion , and the A's have offered to mostly fund it. But the overall plan did not win the support of the Oakland City Council.
"We have an offer before the city council that we have not received a response to," - said President A Dave Kaval Associated Press . "I think we continue to do what we can to pursue a waterfront field, which we think is a dynamic and exciting project. But we're running out of time here in Oakland at our existing facility and we need to look at other options to see what might be possible. "
Clark County, home to downtown Las Vegas, and the unincorporated Strip provided $750 million to help build a $1.9 billion NFL stadium. The rest of the cost of building Allegiant Stadium came from the Bandits and owner Mark Davis.
The future Nevada A's
Located southeast of Las Vegas, Henderson says it's interested in welcoming a Series A. Nevada City has been quietly trying to lure the Arizona Diamondbacks to town in 2019.
"We certainly had a proposal that we put together for the Rattlesnake Diamonds and we were able to resurrect it and talk about it," Henderson Mayor Debra March said Las Vegas Review-Journal . "I would certainly be interested in talking.
Las Vegas or nearby Henderson, some say, makes sense for the five.
RJ Anderson for CBS Sports ranks Las Vegas as the most likely new home for the A's if they decide to move.
